10 Minutes to Italy, 10 Minutes to Roam

italy

Most people think that a mini vacation is one where you take off for a long weekend. But I’m talking about the kind of vacation you can take in a minute…. no matter where you are.

And you can take this respite to faraway places and even to other eras. There is no restriction on time, money or airline schedules.

One of my favorite movies of all times is Dances with Wolves; so much so that when it was playing in theatres, I went to see it 8 times.( That is a big deal for me, because I just don’t see movies more than once. )

Anyway, when I drive to Wichita from my home close to the Missouri Ozarks, I drive right thru the Flint Hills on Highway 400.

There is about a 10 minute stretch of road where, with only a small amount of imagination, I can transform my car into a covered wagon. I do this by pulling out the Dances with Wolves soundtrack and slide it in my CD player.

And viola! I’m on the frontier. In the words of John Dunbar, “Before it is gone.” …expecting any minute to see a buffalo. The music fills me. The prairie is pristine, peaceful. I’m in a more simple time.

One could go even further and imagine that Kevin Costner is with me. And there is a blanket, a cabin and …. I hit Leon and my fuzz buster starts beeping. (There is always a speed trap at Leon)

My covered wagon becomes a Camry again, foot to the breaks, eject the CD, and pay attention to the road. I’m back in 2016, so much better off for my short trip the 1800s prairie.

If you really believed……

….. that your trip to the grocery store,

….. your interaction with the plumber,

….. the phone call from your elderly aunt,

….. the dinner you served your family,

….. and the way you treated the waitress at Denny’s was sacred, how would your day be different?

Your life would be different. That’s for sure.

You would be living it consciously.

You wouldn’t pass by today dreaming of a better, more perfect tomorrow.

You’d actually be present in the NOW, seeing all the small miracles in every moment.

It’s a tall order to BE in the moment. But if you practice it, you will see a world that real dreams are made of. It’s been right here the whole time.

You were the one who was missing.

The Ultimate Turn-off

flipOur world is so full of diversions that we are essentially tuned in and turned on all the time.

Even though we’re not supposed to be texting or talking on the phone while driving, we’ve always got our Garmins to keep us connected.

All our kids have smart phones, laptops and televisions in their rooms. Let’s not forget video games.

We are a turned on society every waking hour of the day.

textIf we get up in the middle of the night we even check our texts.

But it is actually the ‘Ultimate Turn-off that would be the biggest ‘Turn- on’ if you would give it a chance.

You know why?

God talks to us in the space between our thoughts. But when you keep your space so occupied with external things, your internal life is what suffers.

Silence for many is a scary thing and so we keep our minds rushing from one thing to another not realizing that what we are missing is the peace and contentment of our spiritual connection.

Communion with God will be challenging until you learn to quiet the negative self-talk running rampant in your head.

If you can’t hear guidance until your head is quiet and…. you feel like you can’t get quiet without some guidance….. it can feel like a catch 22.

Replacing your ‘head noise’ with a positive thought is a great first step. Find an affirmation that feels good to you. Anytime you notice negative thoughts, calmly repeat your affirmation. Repeat it several times if necessary.

It’s all worth the effort. Soon you will be listening to the sound of peace.

Unlock the Mystery

all the answers

If you just read the box, I bet you’re thinking, “ Oh yeah, RIGHT!”

Believe it or not, you actually do have some internal wisdom that you can tap into.

Everybody has it, but most of the time it is that nudging that we try to ignore. You may have spent so many years denying it that you are completely oblivious to fact that it is still there, quietly in the background .

Here’s one that is a sure fire sign for me.

Whenever I am in the midst of a project or a situation….. and I’m having a degree of unrest with some aspect or another and I think to myself…..

”Oh…… it will probably be all right….”

Well, that’s my hint. My intuition is telling me ‘no’ and I am attempting to ignore it.

And then, when things have gone to ‘hell in a hand basket’ (as my mother would say) I beat myself up with this…. “I knew it, I knew it, I knew it!”

Sound familiar?

On the other side, it is what brings a smile to your heart when things are working out ‘just right’ or you are moving in the best direction. You feel lighter, optimistic.

Listen up….that’s your intuition talkin’.

The good news is that the more you pay attention, the more clear your messages will be.

“All the answers to the questions you have been asking really are right in front of you.”

When in doubt, take a moment to access your intuition, your God connection. It will never let you down.

Are You Waiting for Perfection?

Here’s a story that might alter your point of view.

Many years ago, in an episode of Lou Grant, the paper’s editor, upon finding that his elderly mother did not have long to live, went home to spend her last days with her.

As he paced around in her bedroom, he was lamenting the fact that he had always hoped to find the perfect time to take her on a wonderful trip, just the two of them. And now they would not be able to go.

She sweetly motioned for him to come over and sit beside her and told him that he was living his life and that was exactly what she had wanted him to do. She added that he had been the perfect son for her and that she was satisfied with her life.

And then she told him a story that I’ve never forgotten.

She reminded him about his father who had passed years before…

“Do you remember how your father used to pack a picnic lunch and we’d head off to the ocean? Your dad so wanted to find the perfect place with the perfect view for our lunch. And we would drive and drive. There were lots of beautiful places, but he wanted to find the perfect place. Hours would pass. I’d suggest, “Why don’t we stop here?”

But your dad would respond that he wanted to wait for the perfect spot.  With all the places we could have stopped, none were perfect enough for our picnic. Late in the day we ended up eating our picnic in the car as the sun was getting ready to set, never having stopped, because he never found the perfect place.

And then she focused back on her son, “My life has been wonderful. I couldn’t ask for a better son. I do not need to go on that trip. Just sit with me here and let’s enjoy the time we have right now.”

Don’t miss the beauty of the life you have right here, right now, while you are busy looking for some other situation or some other time when things will be perfect.

Change your perception and find the perfection in the present moment.

What Language are you Speaking?

While in Florida, I spent time with my second cousin, Dee Dee,  and her family. As soon as I arrived we started talking non-stop.  In the past we’d never really had time to sit and just visit one on one.

I was delighted with how much both of us were enjoying the conversation. Clearly, something about us, and the way we like to communicate, was very compatible.

It wasn’t very long before the 5 Love Languages came up. As it turns out, Dee Dee and I have the same love language; meaning that we both feel most loved and most loving when we are spending quality time with another person.

Since I’m a writer, my work is fairly solitary. I sit in front of a computer with my own thoughts most of the time. But, since I’m also a coach, when I’m with a client, helping them find solutions  to their life, career, or business problems, I’m totally in my element, doing the thing that brings the most joy to my soul.

In this hustle bustle world, much of the melancholy and rampant need for antidepressants can be attributed to the fact that people do not feel heard. One on one connection is the first thing to go when the time restraints of work, family and financial stress take over a person’s life.

Added to that is another very important loss in their lives. As a result of all the pressure, people often lose the ability to hear the wisdom of their own inner voice.

Like the rejuvenating experience of talking with another kindred spirit, learning to listen to the yearnings of your soul will actually deliver you from the craziness.  And yet, for so many it is the hardest place to look.

The right coach can help you when you seem unable to connect and lead you out of the dark. By listening, she’ll hear your heart within the story you tell and help you discover the path that will lead you back to peace.

Shine a light on your life. Try Coaching!

People in Brown Paper Packages

Interesting people can be found everywhere at every moment.

Most often we fail to notice them.

They are so subtle, so ‘unimportant looking’… like packages wrapped in plain brown paper.

Some of the most important things and some of the most important people fail to impress us at first blush.

We tend to judge a book by its cover. We make an early snap judgment based on appearances.

If someone is bigger than life, famous, and throws around the names of their ‘important cronies’ or their ‘grand accomplishments,’ we tend to look on them in awe and rush to be near them and their perceived power.

We look right past what we consider to be the small, inconsequential people standing right in front of us.

Sam Walton drove the same old pickup for years. You could likely to run across him in a bibbed overalls looking like an old farmer.

Imagine him driving on a new car lot in that truck.

Can’t you just see the salesmen looking at each other, hoping someone else will go out and waste their time on the old man?

Jesus was born in a lowly manger.
No innkeeper would even make room for him.

An amazing thing was about to happen.
Some lucky innkeeper could have played a big part in the story, but it all looked very ordinary and unimportant to him.

He dismissed them without regard.

Each person born to earth is amazing in their own special way, not to be looked past, or around, not to be ignored.

Brown paper packages… amazing people inside.
